Partners for Justice Season 2 Ending Explained: What Stayed Open

What the closing-credits reveal confirms, why Do Ji-han's new role matters, and what MBC actually said about a third season.

KinoShelf Journal · · 3 min read

The Partners for Justice Season 2 finale does not provide a complete institutional victory. Episodes 31 and 32, both aired on July 29, 2019, instead end with a reveal that changes Do Ji-han and Jang Chul's positions while leaving room for another season. MBC discussed a third season, but did not confirm it.

  • On screen: Do Ji-han and Jang Chul are believed dead, then appear alive during the closing credits.
  • New role: Ji-han has become a lawyer and joined forces with Jang Chul.
  • Official update: MBC said on July 30, 2019 that Season 3 was under consideration and undecided.
  • What followed: Director No Do-chul resigned from MBC the next month; no formal cancellation was announced.

What the Finale Resolves

The finale completes its immediate sequence of danger, but it does not close every institutional thread around the investigation. Its real endpoint is a change in who can act from inside the prosecution system and who must now work beyond it.

This story has 2 spoiler sections.

The unresolved alliance suggests a possible third season, though the writers did not confirm that intent.

What the Closing-Credits Scene Changes

The reveal matters because survival is only half of it. Ji-han's professional change removes him from his former position as a prosecutor, while his alliance with Jang Chul creates a relationship the season does not have time to explore.

This is why the ending feels less like a hidden resolution than a handoff. It answers whether the two men survived and immediately opens a larger question about what they would do next.

Why Do Ji-han's New Role Matters

Ji-han becoming a lawyer is the finale's clearest structural change. He is no longer acting from the same prosecutorial office, so a future story could have placed him on a different side of the legal process. The episode itself does not establish that he has become a vigilante, nor does it fully define his arrangement with Jang Chul.

The credits promise a changed legal position and an alliance. They do not supply the missing third season's motives, methods, or outcome.

What Was Left for Season 3

The surviving alliance is the largest open thread, along with its possible effect on the official lab and prosecution teams. Season 2 stops before these pieces can confront one another in a new case. The result is genuine incompletion, not an alternate ending hidden in the credits.

The series also leaves viewers without a later on-screen account of the pair's partnership. The show has no later on-screen continuation of that partnership.

The Last Verified Renewal Update

On July 30, 2019, one day after the finale, an MBC source said the network was considering a third season but that nothing had been decided. On August 29, it was confirmed that director No Do-chul, who directed both seasons, had submitted his resignation to MBC. Reporting at the time described the prospect of Season 3 as unclear.

Those updates do not equal a formal cancellation. They establish that renewal was considered, remained undecided, and then became less certain after the director's departure. MBC has not announced a third season; claims about a release date need a network announcement.

Forensic Shows for the Wait

God's Quiz offers the longest return to medical crime investigation. Its medical examiner and investigator have five seasons in which to develop their working relationship, making it the best choice when the unfinished partnership is what bothers you most.

The First Responders, also written by Min Ji-eun, moves from the autopsy lab toward police and fire coordination at live emergencies. Our direct comparison explains whether its rescue-scene rhythm fits better than Partners for Justice's post-mortem focus.

Unnatural keeps cause-of-death investigation at the center and completes its compact run in one season. It is the cleanest reset for viewers who want forensic puzzles without another open continuation.
